The Historic Dimension of Exile

Guest Lecture Daniel Baker | 11 May 2026 | 15.00 – 17.00 | Room HS 386 (Rudolfskai 42)

Part of the Course “Journalism in Exile” co-led by Hanan Badr and Thawab Hilal

Daniel Baker received his PhD. title from the School of History at Cardiff University, where he researched violence, emotions, and the Vichy regime in the context of his thesis on the Milice française during the German occupation of France. He undertook undergraduate studies at the University of London Institute in Paris and holds a Master’s degree in modern history from King’s College London. His research interests include fascism, extremism, and European nationalism.

Course Description

Across the world, journalists face censorship, persecution, and violence that force them to flee their home countries. In exile, they continue to work under new constraints, navigating unfamiliar political, linguistic, and cultural environments while striving to maintain professional integrity and independence. This course explores the complex realities of journalism in exile by examining how displacement (re) shapes journalistic practices, ethics, and audience relationships. Using critical approaches, the course investigates how exiled journalists rebuild their careers, networks, and credibility from abroad. It also discusses the role of exiled media, digital platforms, and transnational collaborations in sustaining journalism under threat. The course is divided into three parts: Part I: Foundations, where we look into a conceptual and historical overview of exile journalism, censorship, and media repression across global contexts. Part II: Practices and Challenges, where we explore journalistic work in exile, i.e., ethical dilemmas, digital security, funding models, audience trust, and trauma. And, part III: Case Studies and Applications, where students analyse exiled media outlets and interview journalists from various regions (e.g., Syria, Egypt, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan) and present specific cases and analytical reflections.

About the Lecture

This class explores how historians define and conceptualize exile in comparison with other scholarly disciplines. Through historical examples and comparing competing theories of exile, we examine how exile shapes identity, authority, belonging, and legitimacy of those who experienced it. We also ask when and how exile ends and whether, in personal, social, or political terms, it ever truly does.

Who speaks, who stays silent – and who decides what counts as “objective”: Hanan Badr talks about the entanglement of the media in conflict and peace.

Words can create peace. In an interview for Salzburg-based magazine APROPOS Hanan Badr explains why peace communication demands far more than goodwill: it is about framing, about the invisible voices in the public discourse – and about whose perspective gets heard at all.

In conversation with Konstantia Url-Praher, Badr draws a clear line between what journalism can achieve and what structurally stands in its way: political interests, commercial platform logics, and the seductive pull of escalation in an algorithmic-driven attention machine.

Badr’s perspective is shaped by her research across international institutions – from Cairo University, Freie Universität Berlin, to Gulf University for Science and Technology and Orient-Institut Beirut. That global lens makes her APROPOS interview particularly sharp: this is not media optimism, but a clear account of the conditions under which peace journalism can actually develop.

Badr works at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg, where she heads the Division Public Spheres and Inequalities, and has expertise on peace communication, media power, and coverage of conflicts.

The full interview is available in the current issue of APROPOS (No. 272, May 2026).

Suay Melisa Özkula (Center for ICT&S, University of Salzburg) and Patricia Prieto-Blanco (Lancaster University) introduce the concept of “memetic misogyny” in the academic journal New Media & Society: a form of visual, gender-based violence that often goes unnoticed due to humor, ambiguity, and platform-specific dissemination. Using three case studies—memes about Greta Thunberg, so-called “Karen” memes, and anti-feminist content surrounding the hashtag #SisterIDoBelieveYou—the authors demonstrate how misogynistic messages are encoded through imagery, aesthetics, and context. Crucial to this is the interplay between meme content, platform logic, and the cultural communities in which this content circulates. This interplay generates what the authors call “mythologies of memetic misogyny”: gender-based narratives that portray misogynistic ideas as natural and timeless. The study appears in a special issue of the journal and is available via open access.

From 6 and 10 April, Tales Tomaz visited the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil as part of an Erasmus+ agreement with the University of Salzburg.

During his stay, Tales Tomaz gave lectures on federated social media and platform policy, contributing to academic exchange and strengthening cooperation between the two institutions. The visit also involved UNICAMP professors Diego Vicentin, Marta Kanashiro, and Rafael Evangelista.

The trip also included a lecture at FATEC Mogi Mirim, where Tomaz spoke about research opportunities between Brazil and Europe. Organised by Heber Sales, Director of Innovation and Economic Development of the city of Mogi Mirim, the event brought together technical students, local political authorities, and industry representatives, offering a valuable setting for discussion on international academic collaboration and future partnerships.

The visit highlights the Department of Communication Studies’ growing international links with Brazilian partner institutions and points to promising opportunities for further exchange in teaching and research.

The exhibition “Social Streets. Streets and Squares for Everyone!” opens on April 20, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the foyer of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg (Mirabellplatz 1). Students from the Department of Communication Studies have created audio pieces and mobile reporting videos for the exhibition. The exhibition runs through May 13, 2026; guided tours and workshops can be requested during this period.

The project was developed in collaboration with artists, researchers, clients of Lebenshilfe, school students, and university students, and poses the questions: How do we want to move around tomorrow? Who do our streets and squares belong to?

The exhibition opening will take place as part of the kick-off event “Das CreART-Lab geht auf Tour!” and is part of the Co-CreART.
Mobility and Surveillance: the marriage of 5G networks with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The 5G-IA union is a fundamental element of a promised new cycle of capitalist accumulation which strengthens the centrality of information and surveillance technologies as means of exploitation of populations’ bodies and subjectivities. This presentation builds upon how mobility is constituted in the operation of mobile communication networks to describe the relationship of this infrastructure with data extraction and processing for monetization and appropriation of surplus value. It analyses the relation of co-dependence between 5G networks and AI technologies by describing AI deployments within 5G network management and AI applications that rely on 5G connectivity. Finally, it warns about the escalation of surveillance and data extractivism resulting from the 5G–AI and recognizes the importance of claiming the right to „stay out“.

Pathways for Climate Change Communication in Jordan: Youth Activism, Journalism, and Digital Media

How can climate change communication in the Global South move beyond donor-driven and Western-dominated narratives? Hilals PhD project examines how Jordanian youth activists and journalists navigate the tensions between international funding requirements, state-led agendas, and community-rooted environmental storytelling. Through three interconnected papers, the research investigates whether journalism and digital platforms can serve as sites of epistemic agency in a country disproportionately impacted by climate change yet marginalized in global climate narratives.

As every semester, the two-day orientation workshop kicked off the master’s programme “Communication, Culture & Participation” at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg in the summer semester of 2026. Under the direction of Prof. Peter Winkler and Prof. Christine Lohmeier, all new students – from both the German- and English-language study programmes – came together for the first time. The workshop offers orientation, initial networking, and a joint introduction to academic life at the master’s level. We wish everyone a good start to the semester.
