Procedure & contents of the bachelor’s program<\/h1>\n

The total volume of the program is 180 ECTS<\/strong>, corresponding to a planned study period of six full-time semesters. Students must complete 144 ECTS in Communication Science and 36 ECTS in free electives.<\/p>\n

The program consists of nine modules<\/strong>. It begins with a STEOP<\/strong>, which serves as an orientation for the students whose positive completion is required to continue the study program. As part of the bachelor\u2019s program, students must complete a 12-week internship<\/strong> in a relevant field<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The program concludes with the degree of “BA<\/strong>” (Bachelor of Arts<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

It also provides knowledge of the processes and structures of media communication, which enables students to orientate themselves and serves as preparation for professional activities, e.g. general communication. The VU Theorien 1 will be offered in the SS, VU Theorien 2 in the WS. There are reading courses in both the winter and summer semesters. <\/strong>[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Modul 4: Methoden der Kommunikationswissenschaft”]This module introduces the research paradigms of qualitative and quantitative social research and their basic methods, with a focus on interviewing and content analysis. In preparation for independent quantitative research, descriptive statistics and the basics of inferential statistics are also taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Successful completion of Methods 1 is a prerequisite for participation in Methods 2. Participation in Methods 3 (Quantitative Communication Research) requires completion of both Methods 1 and the VU Statistics BA. <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Successful completion of modules 1 to 4 is required to participate in seminars and bachelor seminars.<\/em><\/strong>! Exercises will develop general skills for media and communication professions such as research, writing, presenting, etc., as well as technical skills for producing reports in different media sectors. This knowledge is put into practice in a number of media laboratories, some of which have been set up as teaching newsrooms, and is placed in an academic context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Admission to the SE bachelor seminar requires the successful completion of modules 1 – 8 with the exception of SE Research Fields 4 and KO Reflection Practice (note: the 12 weeks of compulsory practice must still have been completed and recognised!) Ideally, however, these two courses – KO Reflection Practice and SE Research Fields 4 – should have been completed before attending the bachelor’s seminar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Bachelorarbeit<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The bachelor’s thesis can only be written as part of the bachelor’s seminar. The thesis is 40 to 55 pages long (100,000 to 140,000 characters, including spaces and bibliography). The formal guidelines for writing the Bachelor thesis include the application of the FB’s citation rules (available for download under Service encoded_tag_closed >Forms and Downloads).     Completion of compulsory practice<\/h1>\n

    The compulsory practical training can be completed in one of three different ways. This is where students can find out all the information they need to know.<\/p>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][vc_tta_tabs active_section=”1″][vc_tta_section title=”Work placement” tab_id=”1541170704141-8d0319f6-06f2″][vc_column_text]The work placement<\/strong> can be undertaken with organisations in the media and communications sector at home and abroad. In general, work placements that are relevant to the profession are recognised as …<\/p>\n

    … in media or communication companies – publishing houses, broadcasters, communication agencies (PR, advertising, online) – with at least one relevantly trained and full-time supervising intern.<\/p>\n

    … in business enterprises with a designated own communication department and at least one relevantly trained and full-time supervising trainee manager.<\/p>\n

    In any case, all further placements are subject to individual examination and assessment. In principle, guidance\/supervision by a suitably trained or designated person during the placement is required for recognition\/approval. In particular, this recommendation applies to a range of marketing activities, event marketing and social media activities.<\/p>\n

    Before starting an internship or concluding an internship contract, it is strongly recommended that you ask Boris Romahn for an assessment of your eligibility. You should bring a detailed job description and details of the relevant work placement supervisor.<\/p>\n

    As a general rule, the following will not be recognised as a work placement<\/p>\n

    – Working in family-owned businesses or divisions where relatives are employed in managerial or supervisory positions
    \n– All forms of education, training and holiday work.
    \n– Internships completed before the start of studies
    \n– Activities that do not have a recognisable focus on communication and media or content production
    \n– Marketing activities of a purely business or product type
    \n– Pure artistic, curatorial, graphic, business, tourist activity
    \n– Activities carried out without professional and competent guidance<\/p>\n

    If in doubt, BEFORE undertaking such activities, and BEFORE submitting the application for recognition, please enquire whether credit is possible.<\/p>\n

    The work placement usually involves one continuous activity, but can be completed in up to three parts.     The ECTS credits earned at the foreign university (at least 15 ECTS) will be counted towards the 18 ECTS credits required for the Compulsory Practical Module at the corresponding university.<\/div>\n
    Students may apply for a refund of their tuition fees, provided that they are approved by the Director of Studies and the Legal Department.<\/div>\n
