Elisabeth Klaus heads the inter-university institution Science and Art (Mozarteum and University of Salzburg), a cooperation between the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg and the Mozarteum Salzburg. From 2003 until her retirement in 2020, she was a university professor in the Department of Communication Studies. During this time, she served as head of department (2005-2012), senator (2006-2011) and head of the Communication Theories and Public Spheres division (2003-2020). At Science and Art, she headed the doctoral program (2015-2018), served as chair and then as a member of the curriculum commission for the inter-university doctoral program (2014-2020) and was co-head of the program area “Contemporary Art and Cultural Production” (2015-2020).

After studying mathematics and social sciences in Münster, she completed her PhD studies at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA). She then worked at the Dortmund Institute for Journalism Studies. After her habilitation, she worked as a university lecturer at the Göttingen Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies.
