The open access journal kommunikation.medien, published by the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg, has been awarded the Open Education Award for Excellence 2025 in the Open Practices category. This internationally renowned prize recognizes projects that make an exemplary contribution to promoting open education in science and society through open educational resources and participatory practices. Since 2012, kommunikation.medien has been published as part of a master’s teaching project that combines theory and practice in academic publishing. Students take on all editorial steps – from peer review and text editing to publication – supported and supervised by Associate Professor Corinna Peil. The aim of the project is to bring together the promotion of young academics and open science, thereby strengthening transparency, participation, and accountability in the academic publication process. The award recognizes this teaching and publication model as an exemplary form of open science practice. At the same time, it underscores the contribution of the Department of Communication Studies to the promotion of open access and open education in university teaching.
