Job description
At Department of Communication Studies / AB Media Use & Digital Cultures the position of research and teaching assistant in accordance with the Austrian Universities Act and the Salaried Employees Act as a university assistant in accordance with § 26 of the Collective Agreement for Universities (doctoral candidate) is available. (Category B1; the minimum monthly salary for this position is € 2,786.10 gross (14× per year) and may be increased on the basis of the collective agreement regulations by taking into account previous job-specific experience).
– Planned start of employment: October 01, 2025
– Duration of employment: 4 years
– Hours of employment per week: 30
– Working hours: by arrangement
The Department of Media Use & Digital Cultures, headed by Prof. Dr. Christine Lohmeier, focuses its teaching and research on the significance of media for people in their everyday activities – against the background of media and social change processes such as digitalization and individualization as well as changes in sociality and its production.
Responsibilities:
– Academic support in research and teaching in the field of Media Use & Digital Cultures;
– administrative tasks;
– independent research activities including the writing and publication of a dissertation;
– independent teaching of two semester hours per week, probably from the second year of employment;
– collaboration in research projects.
Employment requirements:
– Completed diploma or master’s degree in communication science with a focus on media use & digital cultures;
– admission to the relevant doctoral program at the University of Salzburg.
Desired additional qualifications:
– The dissertation should be compatible with one of the following research areas:
(1) communication studies of memory research, in particular the significance of digital media in the context of family memory;
(2) the reciprocal relationship between media/communication and space (e.g. navigation or digital placemaking);
(3) the development and appropriation of new technologies (e.g. in the field of Kl or Web3) and the associated community processes and social challenges;
– Candidates should also have a broad interest in the importance of communication for identity constructions and social dynamics in different constellations and areas of life;
– experience in the application of qualitative methods of empirical social research;
– good academic German and English, both written and spoken.

– communication and teamwork skills;
– critical faculties, ability to work under pressure, self-organization, solution orientation.
