Jan Groos is Director of the Media Lab at the Department of Communication Studies at University of Salzburg. His research focuses on democratic futures, critical media practice, and public knowledge production. His work on democratic planning as well as his public research practice in the context of the Future Histories podcast has made him an internationally recognized voice in the field of democratic transformation and alternative futures.
Academic Career
Jan Groos received his diploma degree from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and completed his PhD at the Centre of Sociological Theory at Kiel University with a dissertation on Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Algorithmic Governance. He was Head of Research for Democratic Change and Knowledge at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), Research Fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin and at the Remarque Institute of New York University. He is affiliated researcher at the digital_cultures research cluster at FernUniversität Hagen, the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), and the Critical Data Lab at the University of Oldenburg. Jan Groos is also founder of the Future Histories LAB.
