From Salzburg to Brazil
Suay Melisa Özkula represented KoWi Salzburg at the Association of Internet Researchers Conference (AoIR 2025) in Niterói, Brazil. She chaired and led the panel “Ambient Misogyny,” bringing together scholars to discuss how gender-based harm is embedded in online visuals and platform design.
Her presentation is part of the ongoing project Critical Interventions into Platformed Visual Misogyny with Patricia Blanco (University of Lancaster), which examines how subtle forms of online hate manifest across visual and algorithmic spaces.
Together with Maria Schreiber , Jing Zeng (University of Zürich), and Ariadna Matamoros-Fernandez (University College Dublin), Özkula also received the ECREA Open Access Book Prize for their forthcoming edited volume Critical Visual Research for Social Media, to be published in 2026.
