Media change: Contemporary cases, consequences, and conceptualizations
Media change is constant, but it is rarely straightforward. While some shifts in the media landscape are rapid and transformative, others unfold slowly, unevenly, or even stall and reverse. In this talk, Neil Thurman will examine this complexity, drawing on a series of contemporary case studies. Situating media change within broader historical and conceptual frameworks, he will reveal how today’s most pressing issues in media are part of longer trajectories of change, shaped by forces such as technological innovation, economic pressures, and cultural resistance. The talk distills the content of Professor Thurman’s new book Media Change (Wiley, 2026).

Termin: 06. Oktober 2026, 12:00 bis 13:00 Uhr
Conservative Female Lifestyle Influencers (C-FLIs) and Grey Areas of inconspicous conservatism
This talk addresses the socio-political backdrop of gender backlash and the rise of the manosphere, examining how participatory digital cultures disseminate conservative messages through everyday practices and aesthetics via two novel concepts: “Conservative Femininity Lifestyle Influencers (CFLIs)” and the “Grey Area”. Such an approach will lead to a) describing the hybrid nature of digital spaces where conservative norms are marketed as attractive lifestyles to a broad audience; b) outlining a framework for understanding the reconfiguration and normalization of conservative gender norms through affect, aesthetics, and visibility on digital platforms.

ACCESS/EXCESS: Working on (Media) Agency
Dokumentarische Medien versprechen Zugang, doch was uns erreicht, hängt davon ab, wer aufzeichnen konnte und welche Bilder zirkulieren durften.

Termin: 03. November 2026 12:00 bis 13:00 Uhr
Augmenting or Replacing Creativity? Lessons from the Music Business’s Approach to Artificial Intelligence
This talk draws on the material collected and analysed for the book Artificial Intelligence and the Music Industry: Winners, Losers and the Human Premium (Anthem, 2028). It shows how the diffusion of AI in the production of musical content is pressuring distributors to modify their business models and institutional actors to issue new rules, with platforms increasingly acting as de facto regulators of how AI can be used for music that becomes public. It also considers how AI is affecting different types of artists, and finds that the least established are the most penalised. Throughout, attention is paid to those issues that bear transferability to other cultural sectors.

Along the (Dis)Connection Continuum: Insights from the planned empirical fieldwork in Lisbon
This Lunchtalk will examine the relationship between digital disconnection and social as well as digital inequalities, introducing the digital disconnection continuum as a heuristic framework to systematize these dynamics. It will also outline plans for fieldwork in Lisbon, scheduled from March to June 2027. Employing a qualitative approach, including digital ethnography, critical and creative methods, and semi-structured interviews, the study explores the practices, strategies, and tactics of disconnection among Bolt and Uber drivers in the Portuguese capital.
Vortragende Margaux Brecht (Universität Salzburg)
Termin: 15.
