KoWi Salzburg Hosts Shumow Memorial Symposium
The University of Salzburg hosted the Shumow Memorial Symposium as part of the 20th Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change
On 31 July 2026, the Public Spheres and Inequalities (PSI) Division at the Department of Communication Studies, University of Salzburg, hosted the Shumow Memorial Symposium. The event was co-organised with the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, a programme of Salzburg Global. The Symposium is dedicated to the memory of the late faculty colleague Moses Shumow, who believed that dialogue brings people together to find ways forward on the world’s most pressing issues.
This year’s Shumow Memorial Keynote was titled “Living in Loving Discomfort” by Professor Chris Harris (Nevada State College). The programme also included a screening of Perfectly a Strangeness and closed with reflections on two decades of the Academy by Professor Paul Mihailidis (Emerson College).
2026 marks the 20th edition of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change. Under the theme “Created Histories, Creative Tomorrows: Distinct Moments that Shape Media Futures” participants explore the technological and cultural turning points in media history and their influence on today’s and tomorrow’s media ecologies.
The collaboration ties into Salzburg Global’s 2026 spotlight theme, “Meeting the Moment. Shaping the Future,” which marks its 80th anniversary. It builds on a long standing cooperation between University of Salzburg and Salzburg Global.
